The Maiden, Fred T. Foard and St. Stephens football teams are three of eight programs that will receive wins after Hickory High School used an ineligible football player during the 2011 season.

The result leaves the Red Tornadoes winless in 2011 at 0-13. Their record before the forfeits was 8-4-1, including a postseason appearance.

Hickory vacated its 47-20 victory at Maiden on Sept. 2, along with the Red Tornadoes’ wins against conference schools St. Stephens (49-14) and Fred T. Foard (31-6).

Other wins forfeited include victories against non-league opponents North Gaston (41-26) and Winston-Salem Reagan (16-13), as well as Northwestern Conference opponents Alexander Central (34-14) and Hibriten (34-28).

The Red Tornadoes also vacate a season-opening 7-7 tie to Statesville on Aug. 19.

A 36-26 postseason win against Hibriten, Hickory’s first playoff victory since 2007, is also vacated.

Hickory is the second Catawba County football program tagged with this violation, joining Maiden. The Blue Devils used an ineligible player during their Sept. 9 game against St. Stephens and forfeited a 36-10 win against the Indians.

The changes adjust the Blue Devils’ final record to 10-4, Foard’s record to 3-7 and St. Stephens’ record to 5-7. The Indians finish 3-3 in league play and the Tigers finish 2-4, while Hickory finishes last at 0-6 in the Northwestern Conference standings.

According to North Carolina Athletic Association policy, the Red Tornadoes are required to pay a $500 fine for using an ineligible player, but the fine is usually cut in half if a school reports the violation.
