Luis scores two goals in Red Devils' victory

Newton-Conover scored six minutes into Thursday’s game and never looked back.

The Lady Red Devils earned their third victory of the season, knocking off a tough Maiden team at home.

The win comes after Newton-Conover (3-13-0, 3-5-0) started the season with a 1-10 record.

“Coming into this game, our mindset was that every game counts,” said N-C coach Robert Froyd. “Even if we don’t go into the postseason, every game for us counts. It is a matter of pride, making sure we have respect for ourselves and showing each other what could have been.”

Leading the Lady Red Devils in victory was senior Martha Luis, who scored both of her team’s goals. Luis had one goal on the season coming into the Thursday’s game.

“We really wanted this win,” Luis said. “We needed it. This helps us a lot. Hopefully, it will get our hopes up, we can play better and try to make it to the playoffs.”

Luis scored her first goal six minutes into the first half of the game. That gave her team the early 1-0 lead.

“Martha is someone I consider as one of the workhorses of the team,” Froyd said. “She is very reliable. I can put her in any position, and I know what to expect out of her. I don’t want to talk light about any of the girls on the team, but Martha has a good foot, she knows how to use it in her role and she can kick the ball.”

Maiden (9-5-1, 5-2-1) attempted to create some offense, but struggled in the game. The Blue Devils had six shots on goal in the game.

“Our girls talked well and we knocked the ball around,” Froyd said. “There was a lot of give-and-go. There were a lot of good thoughts out there. I thought we had some decent shots on goal, and created some good opportunities. Right now, I still feel like we have some things to work on. I think the girls are excited about working on those things.”

The Lady Red Devils got another great opportunity to score in the second half. Maiden goalkeeper Christina Helms was called for interference on Luis, who was awarded a penalty kick.

The shot by Luis bounced off of Helms, and landed right back in front of the net.

Luis had one thought when she saw the ball ricochet off of the goalkeeper.

“It has to go in,” Luis said. “I don’t care how, but it has to go in. It was sort of unexpected.”

Luis stepped in front of the rebound on the right side of the goal, and booted the ball into the net for her second goal of the game.

“I commend her for that shot,” Froyd said. “That is something I would expect of any player on my team.”

The Blue Devils showed spurts in the second half. They attempted to score several times, and showed more of an offensive spark.
However, Maiden were unable to get a goal on the board, as the Red Devils earned the victory.

“Right now, we don’t know if we are going to make it into the playoffs or not” Froyd said. “That is just because of the way our season started off. The one thing I can say about them is that they have a matter of pride, a matter of confidence and a matter of knowing what they can do.”
