Long time Newton business man dies

April 25, 2013

Epps

Following the death Wednesday morning at a local hospital of  83-year-old Newton businessman Joseph Schrum Epps, his family gathered to reminisce about the life of the man thousands knew simply as Joe Epps.

His wife, Betty, a long-time elementary school teacher in Conover, where the family had lived for half a century, and sons Dr. Bradley Epps and Erich Epps, also educators like their mother, talked about the Newton native’s vocation and his avocation.

Epps, who spent his career in downtown Newton operating a two-generational family-owned commercial printing business, his vocation, was widely known throughout Catawba and surrounding counties through his more than half century of calling on other businesses to offer his company’s services.

To read more of this story, pick up the Friday edition of Catawba County's community newspaper, The Observer News Enterprise, at newsstands throughout the county.
