Long time educator dies

March 22, 2013

Hugh Ivor Setzer Jr. devoted his lifetime to the public education of children in his native Catawba County. He opened one elementary school in Newton and closed a historic one during his lengthy career.

The distinguished educator died Thursday at age 86.

Before his retirement in 1980, he not only taught and was principal of local schools during the yearly academic period but during summers served as coordinator of the pre-school federal Head Start program, worked with youngsters at 4-H Camp, Camp Carolwood and Sipes Orchard Home.
