Local student thankful for safety after Typhoon

The winds that reached nearly 200 mph from Typhoon Haiyan were felt far beyond the islands of the Philippines and into the state of North Carolina as the storm ripped through homes and took the lives that stood in its path.

Philippines native Keylene Versoza attends Lenoir-Rhyne University and is in her junior year studying nursing. Her family moved from the islands shortly after she was born, leaving their extended family on the island of Samar. Versoza has gone back to visit, and her grandma and two of her aunts have moved to the states since then.
