NEWTON — While serving in the National Guard during the Gulf War, the Rev. Rick Reid said he was inspired by a chaplain.

While Reid was on the front lines, the chaplain came and collected everyone's phone number to contact families. Through that act of compassion Reid said his own goal of serving in the ministry began.

Reid took the first step of his journey to seminary at Emmanuel Baptist University in 1996, where Reid earned his undergraduate degree from Emmanuel by commuting to Shelby. He then earned his master's through the Emmanuel campus in Connelly Springs.
