Newton native Becky McRee is home again and is married to a high school classmate. But during the years since their 1961 graduation, she lived in one of the world’s bloodiest war zones as the daughter-in-law of a Moslem sheikh and traveled the globe repeatedly.

Rebecca Ikerd Alghrary-McRee, whose career included stints as a newspaper writer, has penned a book about those exotic years. She is now giving talks to area groups about the book, “From the Catawba to the Tigris: The Adventures of a Southern Girl In Iraq,” and is planning to consign it for sale at local bookstores.

To read more of this story, pick up the Tuesday edition of Catawba County's community newspaper, The Observer News Enterprise, at newsstands throughout the county.
