The Observer News Enterprise is blogging about tonight's NFL preseason action featuring the Carolina Panthers and Chicago Bears.
Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is intercepted on his team's opening drive by cornerback Josh Norman.
The Panther capitalize with a three-play, 18-yard drive, capped with a three-yard pass from Cam Newton to Brandon LaFell.
After a three-and-out on Carolina's next possession, Newton is intercepted by middle linebacker Jonathan Bostic, who returns it 51 yards for the game-tying touchdown.
Newton exits in favor of back up Derek Anderson on the team's third drive. Newton finishes his day 3-of-6 for 16 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
As the quarter winds down, Cutler is still in the game along with Carolina's first team defense. The Bears are faced with a 4th down and 1 as the quarter winds down.
END OF FIRST QUARTER: CAROLINA 7, CHICAGO 7
Chicago punts to start the quarter. It's fair caught by Joe Adams at the 8-yard line, but a penalty takes the ball half the distance to the goal line. First and 10 Carolina at its own 4-yard line.
On 3rd down and 13, Anderson completes a 17-yard pass to former Appalachian State standout Armanti Edwards for a first down. Drive continues with another 17-yard pass by Anderson, this time to Ted Ginn, Jr.
Anderson is intercepted on the next play by Chicago's Zack Bowman. There is also a facemask on the play by Carolina. The Bears take over at the 36-yard line.
Josh McCown takes over at quarterback for the Bears, relieving Cutler, who finishes the game 6-of-8 for 56 yards and an interception. McCown with a couple of passes early in the drive to the end zone, but no success.
A 35-yard field goal by Robbie Gould gives Chicago its first lead of the game with 10:15 left until halftime. The Bears marched 19 yard in six plays using 1:33 of the clock during the scoring drive.
On the ensuing Panthers' drive, running Kenjon Barner fumbles after taking a pass from Derek Anderson. Chicago cornerback Sherrick McManis recovers the fumble.
Already in Carolina territory, the Bears drive. McCown hits running back Armando Allen with a pass, but Allen fumbles. The fumbled is forced and recovered by Anderson Russell. Panthers take over at their own 11.
Panthers go three-and-out on offense with Anderson nearly being intercepted for about the third time in tonight's game. Carolina punts and it is returned to the 38-yard line by Chicago. First and 10 for the Bears.
Linebacker Chase Blackburn sacks McCown for a 8-yard loss to start the Chicago drive. It's Blackburn's first sack as a Panther and second tackle of the game. The Bears go three-and-out and punt from the 38-yard line to the Carolina 18.
At the two-minute warning, Carolina is on the 34-yard line face with a 2nd down and 5. David Gettis catches a 19-yard pass from Anderson to convert a first down after the break in action. Gettis catches another big pass two plays later, connecting with Anderson for an 18-yard pass-and-catch.
After a Panthers timeout, Anderson finds tight end Brandon Williams for 24 yards. Carolina is on the 5-yard line with 26 seconds left until halftime.
Barner rushes five yards for his first touchdown. Carolina leads 14-10 after the extra point. The drive lasts 11 plays, 82 yards in 4:16.
Chicago returns the kickoff and gets extra yardage after Carolina commits a facemask penalty. The Bears kneel as we head to halftime.
HALFTIME: CAROLINA 14, CHICAGO 10
Chicago starts the half with the ball, but goes three-and-out. Carolina gets the ball back at its own 45-yard line. Panthers drive to Chicago's 27, but fumble the ball.
Bears defensive lineman Zach Minter recovers the ball. Chicago takes over at its own 29.
Chicago drives into Carolina territory, but the drive ends on a 60-yard interception return for a touchdown by cornerback Josh Norman. The pick is Norman's second of the game. Carolina pads its lead, 21-10.
The Bears try to rebound from their turnover on their third possession of the half. Chicago drives into Carolina territory behind quarterback Matt Blanchard. The drive stalls after Blachard is sacked by Panthers linebacker Jason Williams. Carolina takes over on the 15-yard line.
END OF THIRD QUARTER: CAROLINA 21, CHICAGO 10
Panthers cannot convert a first down. They punt from their own 18 to the Chicago 42. There is 13:54 left in tonight's game.
Bears quarterback Matt Blachard connects with wideout Marquess Wilson for a 58-yard play that takes the ball down to the Carolina 4-yard line.
Running back Michael Ford finishes the drive with a touchdown run on the next play. Chicago trims its deficit to 21-17 with 12:53 left in the game.
Carolina starts its next drive from the 24-yard line. Panthers running back Armond Smith getting some early carries, including a 13-yard scamper to start the drive.
Panthers driving into Bears territory behind two passes for 32 yards from quarterback Jimmy Clausen. Carolina calls timeout with 9:12 remaining in the game.
Panthers cannot get into the end zone, but convert on a 50-yard Graham Gano field goal. There is 7:38 left in tonight's games.
Chicago gets the ball back, but goes three-and-out. The Bears bunt to the Carolina 28. Jimmy Clausen converts a key third down on a scramble. Clausen and running back Tauren Poole working well together to run clock out. Chicago calls timeout with 3:20 left in the game.
Carolina cannot convert on 3rd down and 4 and is forced to punt. Chicago takes the ball at its own 15 with 3:10 left in the game.
Bears run a no huddle offense in the final two minutes trying to tie the game. Chicago calls its final timeout with 0:51 seconds left. Blanchard's last minute scramble comes up short. Clausen kneels to seals Carolina's victory.
FINAL SCORE: Carolina 24, Chicago 17
