Library sections to reopen

August 26, 2010

The Main Library in Newton is expected to open its children and teen sections next week following repairs for extensive water damage.

Heavy rain on Aug. 18 and 19 caused water to leak inside the library, which damaged several paperback books, as well as the library’s carpet and molding around the ceiling.

“We’re hoping (to reopen) sometime early next week,” said Lynne Reed, Main Library branch manager.

The carpet surrounding the area needs replacement from water damage.
“Amazingly, very few books were damaged,” Reed said. “Water just came in and poured down on the area.”

A boot fits down over the building’s air pipe, and during the rain, the boot slipped off and allowed the water to leak inside the building, Reed said.

Funding to pay for repairs will come from the building’s maintenance budget.

“We’re hoping insurance will pay for some of the costs,” said Catawba County Finance Manager Rodney Miller.

The county hasn’t received a bill for the clean-up services, but Miller said each county building has allocated funds for building maintenance and repair.

Miller said the Main Library hasn’t had water damage before, but another county building experienced water damage from extensive rain.
