Lenoir-Rhyne Bears survive, beat Bulldogs

The Lenoir-Rhyne men’s basketball team held off Wingate at home Wednesday for a 75-71 win in Hickory.

Sophomore Allan Jones led the Bears (6-8, 2-3) with 20 points, and forward D.J. Blackmon added 18 points.

Jamie Vaughn netted 16 points for Wingate (7-8, 3-2), while Quan Alexander scored 16 points of his own off of the Bulldog bench.

Despite leading by 13 with 15:07 left, the Bulldogs whittled down the lead to one with 3:28 remaining in the ball game.

The Bears followed with five-straight points, including a jumper by Blackmon, two free throws by Jones and a free throw by Kevin Davis.

Wingate 63, Lenoir-Rhyne 57

The Lady Bears (11-3, 3-2) were upset at home by Wingate.

Tiffany Brown scored 13 points, while teammate Simone Rutledge tacked on 12 points to lead the Lady Bulldogs (8-5, 2-3).

Lenoir-Rhyne shot 33 percent from the field, and were out-rebounded 47-39 in the game.

Jazmine Charles led L-R with 10 points and four rebounds, while Whitley Culler and Cameron Sealey both scored nine points each.
