An early afternoon riding lawn mower accident sent a Newton man to the hospital Thursday. The accident happened on the corner of Boston Road and N.C. 10.

Angie Queen, a nearby neighbor, identified the man on the mower as Pete Hollar.

“When I came out and looked on top of it, I thought the lawn mower was on top of him,” Hollar said. “But they said he jumped clear.”

Master Police Officer Brett Williams, of the Newton Police Department, said Holler and his lawn mower fell into the Department of Transportation's hole. One of the tires on the mower got too close to the hole.
