Lail's three lifts Bucs over Cobras

November 9, 2011

Trailing by nine points at the midway point of the second half, the Catawba Valley Community College basketball team kicked it into another gear.

The Bucs scored 48 points in the second half, most of which came late in the game, leading CVCC to a 78-76 come-from-behind victory at home against Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute (CCCTI).

CVCC coach Bryan Garmroth said the change started when his team trailed 35-30 at the half.

“In the first half, we were just floating passes on offense,” Garmroth said. “We weren’t running our offense. We ran nothing that we practiced. We just started looking for our stuff, penetrating more, hitting open people and getting ball reversal.”

The biggest shot came from CVCC’s Justin Lail. After CCCTI’s Adam Raye hit a three to give his team the lead, Lail, a sophomore, answered with a trey of his own to give the Bucs the lead for good.

“That’s a game-winner, Garmroth said. “He isn’t afraid to shoot. That was a huge shot. He wanted it. You could see it in his eyes.”

Lail said the second half burst was due to a couple of adjustments that he and his teammates decided to make.

“We bought into coach’s plan,” Lail said. “We started working on it together, started communicating and it came together as a whole.”
Garmroth said he was impressed with the victory against a team the caliber of the Cobras.

“That’s a great team we beat there,” Garmroth said. “This is a big win.”
