Lenoir-Rhyne kicker Colin Corpe is having a special week. Corpe garnered two awards for his performance Saturday in the Bears’ home win, their first since 2006, over Tusculum.
Corpe won the South Atlantic Conference’s Special Teams Player of the Week on Monday, and on Wednesday he won the D2Football.com’s weekly special teams player award.
Corpe made four field goals Saturday, including a career-long, 47-yard kick, and two extra points scoring 14 points in Lenoir-Rhyne’s 34-31 win.
The senior kicker from Florida made 10 of 16 field goals this season and 23 of 25 points after touchdown. He is second on team in 2010 scoring with 53 points so far this season.
Three teams from Catawba County — two from the Catawba Valley 2-A and one from the Northwestern 3-A/4-A — are back on the court Thursday. The CVAC’s top-two teams and the top 3-A team from the Northwestern conference are on the road in the third round of the both division’s West playoffs.
Newton-Conover travels Thursday to Starmount for a match between a pair of No. 1 teams. The Red Devils swept the CVAC this season, and the Rams are the top team from the Mountain Valley conference.
Neither team has lost a set in two playoff matches.
Bandys, the CVAC’s No. 2, also has not lost a set in the playoffs, and it puts that streak on the line at 5 p.m. Thursday against Polk County. The match features a pair of 19-win teams.
Polk County (19-7) finished second in the Western Highlands conference.
St. Stephens is one of only two teams still alive in the 3-A West playoffs with less than 20 wins. The Indians’ 17 victories this season is the lowest among the remaining eight teams in the West.
The Indians, the No. 1 out of the Northwestern conference, play their third-round match Thursday at West Henderson. West Henderson is the top team from the Appalachian Athletic conference and is 20-4 this season.
