Mark Killian, a noted defense attorney in Catawba County, was sworn in as District Court Judge for the 25th Judicial District at the old courthouse in downtown Newton, Friday.

The historic courtroom was filled with Killian's friends, family and colleagues as Superior Court Judge Timothy Kincaid administered the oath of office to Killian.

Killian is filling a vacancy since Superior Court Judge Beverly Beal retired in December and District Court Judge Thomas Edwards was elevated to Superior Court Judge. This created an opening for a judge in District Court.

The three bar associations that comprise the 25th District — Catawba, Burke and Caldwell counties — met late in December and selected the names of three attorneys to present to the governor for consideration.

Gov. Beverly Perdue appointed Killian just prior to the end of the year.
