Johnson homers twice for Post 29

June 22, 2011

Hickory third basemen Skyler Hollar fields a
ground ball in the second inning of Tuesday's game
against Caldwell County at American Legion Fairgrounds.
After an hour rain delay, Hickory trailed Caldwell, 8-1,
after seven innings. Final score was not available as
of press time.

Hickory Post 48 and Caldwell County Post 29 battled two things Tuesday — the weather and each other.

Caldwell’s Blake Johnson homered twice — a two-run bomb in the top of the first inning and a solo shot in the fifth inning — to give Post 29 the 8-1 lead after seven innings.

The final two innings and score were not available due to press time.
Post 29 (11-5, 9-3) took the early 3-0 lead behind Johnson’s first home run and an RBI-single from Max Linville.

A fourth run scored for Caldwell County in the top of the third inning, when Jon Gray plated Bowman on a single.

Hickory’s first run came in the bottom of the third inning from the bat of pitcher Jeremy Null. He singled to plate center fielder Phillip Carroll.

Both teams then battled over an hour rain delay before returning to the diamond.

After the delay, Hickory (6-7, 5-7) was able to get its offense going and loaded the bases in the bottom of the third inning.

However, Caldwell pitcher Spencer Greer was able to work out of trouble, striking out one batter and forcing another hitter to ground out.

Post 29 added three runs to its tally — one each in the fifth, sixth and seventh inning.

Johnson’s second home run was the first of those runs, as he belted a shot over left-center field.

Hickory returns to action tomorrow at home in a make-up doubleheader against Asheville at 5 p.m.
