Johnson, 49ers open second season with 33-9 win

BUIES CREEK — Matt Johnson and the Charlotte 49ers football team kicked off their second-ever campaign with a 33-9 victory on the road Thursday night against Campbell.

Johnson completed 14-of-30 passes for 189 yards in the contest for the Niners (1-0).

Ahead 6-3 at halftime, 49ers running back Kalif Phillips scored three touchdowns in the third quarter, including a 10-yard run and a pair of 1-yard runs, to put UNC Charlotte ahead for good.

UNC Charlotte kicker Blake Brewer also set the school record with a 50-yard field goal in the first quarter of the contest. Brewer set the previous record with a 43-yarder last fall.

The 49ers are back in action next Saturday at Richardson Stadium against Johnson C. Smith. Game time is set for noon.
