Jobless rate up slightly

The jobless rate is up not just for Catawba County, but the entire Hickory-Lenoir-Morganton region.

While the unemployment rates are up and still above 10 percent, information released by the state's department of commerce revealed the jobless rates are still well below those issued for the same time last year.

Catawba County's unemployment rate in May was reported at 10.8 percent, up slightly from the 10.4 percent reported in April, according to the N..C. Department of Commerce. The unemployment rate represents 7,914 people reported as unemployed among a labor for of 73,250. The May rate represents 286 additional people reported unemployed by the Division of Employment Security.

In May 2012, the unemployment rate was 12.4 percent.
