Investigation continues into Claremont shooting

July 30, 2012

County investigators are piecing together the events surrounding a Saturday shooting which left one man dead after gunshots were exchanged between family members at close proximity.

Catawba County Sheriff's Department Capt. Joel Fish said Earl Barton Dople, 64, was killed at his home Saturday afternoon after an alleged argument with his stepson, Jackson Cain Whisenant, 35. Fish said Whisenant was arrested that day and charged with one count of a felon in possession of a firearm and was later released. An autopsy is scheduled in Winston-Salem today, and Fish said evidence from the investigation will be given to the district attorney's office for possible future charges stemming from the incident.

Investigators say it is unclear what started the shooting, but Fish said disagreements between the family members began in May following a death.
