Rain forced the St. Stephens’ soccer team to move its home game on the road Wednesday to Lenoir-Rhyne University.
The Lady Indians (16-3-3) responded by flooding their opponent, RS Central, with defense and drowning them in goals.
Macy Franklin scored three goals, including two in the second half, and Sabrina Summers had three assists, as St. Stephens rolled to a first round victory.
“We hit the ball real well,” said Indians’ coach Chuck Davis. “We scored when we needed to. Most of our girls have played (at L-R) before. Normally, we play a regular season game on this field. This was the first year we hadn’t.”
“If we can play like this in the playoffs, we might have to ask if we can play here for the rest of our games,” Davis said.
The Indians were caught off guard in the first half, when the Lady Hilltoppers entered the field with nine players to St. Stephens’ 11 because of disciplinary reasons.
Despite the difference in players, St. Stephens managed to score one goal in the first 9:55.
“That freaked us out,” Davis said. “We didn’t know what to do. The girls got out there, played 10 minutes with those nine in and scored one goal at 9:55.”
After their early struggles, the Lady Indians responded in the final 30:05 with three goals.
Franklin, Nichole Siemering, Alex Roarke and Kalyn Meosky scored one goal each in the first half.
Franklin said the change in venue actually helped her.
“Coach said we were going to play on the big field,” Franklin said. “We like that because we use big fields to our advantage.”
Summers said she preferred Moretz Stadium to home turf.
“I personally like this field better,” Summers said. “Our field is half dirt and the ball bounces really high. This field is really nice.”
Ahead by four heading into the second half, Franklin preceded to add two more goals to her total to distance her team from RS Central for good.
St. Stephens plays its next game on Friday due to the prom being held on Saturday. They will face Enka at L-R’s Moretz Sports-Athletic Complex.
Summers is excited for Friday’s contest, even more so than Saturday’s festivities.
“Actually, I’m looking forward to our game more than prom,” Summers said. “Just don’t tell my date that.”View more articles in:
