Indians' Payne inflicts four TDs against Foard in win
"Senior Night" is a special moment for high school students, but for the Fred T. Foard football team, it is a night they want to forget.
St. Stephens running back Marcus Payne scored four touchdowns to lead the Indians to a 35-13 win over the host Tigers on Friday night in Newton.
"They ran the same thing on film" said Foard coach Jason Phelps. "We just could not stop them."
Payne took the Indians' first offensive play 53 yards for a score to give St. Stephens the lead 17 seconds into the ball game.
Later in the quarter, Payne scored his second touchdown from one-yard out and a two-point conversation pass by quarterback Marvin Sutton made the score 14-0.
Foard (2-7, 0-5) struggled on offense in the first quarter. It did not record a first down in the quarter.
Tigers quarterback Jacob Schmidt helped his team finally get a first down in the second quarter, but the promising drive ended when Foard fumbled.
The Indians (2-7, 1-3) pounced on the mistake. Payne scored for the third time from nine yards out making the score 21-0.
Schmidt helped Foard get on the board before halftime with a six-yard touchdown run.
Payne continued his tear with his fourth and final touchdown run from three yards out to put the Indians up 21 points with four minutes left in the third quarter.
Zac Fincannon added the final touchdown for the Indians from eight yards out, while Schmidt scored the final touchdown of the game on a 26-yard run.
The Indians try to win their third-straight game next week when they welcome Hickory (5-4, 2-2) this Friday night.
Foard is off next week before playing rival the Red Tornadoes in the regular season finale on the road in two weeks.
