Indians fall in first match

The St. Stephens Indians lost their first volleyball match of the season Monday. The Indians lost 3-0 on the road at West Iredell.
West Iredell defeated St. Stephens 25-23, 25-18 and 25-20. The Indians are 0-1 after the loss.
Nicole Hardy led St. Stephens with five kills and 14 digs. Paige Heeke had five kills, and Abby Foster had 17 assists.
The Indians next match is at 6 p.m. Tuesday at home against Draughn.

MEN'S SOCCER
Newton-Conover opened its season Monday with a tough loss at Shelby. The Golden Lions defeated the Red Devils 5-0.
Shelby’s Michael Cheaney led Shelby with two goals. The Golden Lions outshot the Red Devils 14-2.
Newton-Conover goalkeeper Hunter Nestor had four saves.
