Indian boys, N-C girls win, Whitener scores 1,000th

After going 0-for-9 on three-pointers in the first half against Newton-Conover, the St. Stephens boys basketball found its stroke.

The Indians (4-2) made four three-pointers in the final half and held off late charge by the Red Devils, including a last-second three that banked off of the rim and out.

Drew Starkey led the Indians with 13 points, while Chris Hefner pitched in nine points.

Tyoun Shufford scored 16 points for N-C (2-2).

Girls basketball

Newton-Conover 82, St. Stephens 16

Senior guard Shynese Whitener scored a game-high 20 points, including her 1,000th career point, leading the Lady Red Devils to the victory.

Natashia Early and Taylor Petty added 17 points each for N-C (3-1).
Claire Menard led St. Stephens (1-5) with six points.
