Homeless veteran aid

March 21, 2012

Donations of time, money and supplies are needed for an April event that will provide a variety of care for the region's homeless veterans.

Veteran organizations, medical personnel, social service representatives and community leaders from the Hickory area will hold a “Stand Down” event to provide services for homeless veterans, needy veterans and any other community members in need of help April 20.

The 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. event will provide breakfast and lunch; dental, vision and podiatry services; nutrition and health education; social services; clothing; sleeping bags, toiletries, boots and other military surplus items.

Organizers expect at least 250 veterans to attend the event at the American Legion Fairgrounds on U.S. 70.

Volunteer doctors and citizens, as well as donations of money and care items, are needed for the event.

To help, call Jim Starkey at 719-210-0187 or Larry McMullen at 828-320-2842.
