December 22, 2010

Newton Police are looking for a motorist who allegedly caused thousands of dollars in damage when the driver's car crashed into an apartment building.

The incident happened Wednesday several minutes after midnight at the Sandalwood Apartments at East 11th Street and Mount Olive Church Road in Newton.

The driver of a white and gray Jeep was parked at building 712 near apartment A when, according to a witness, the motorist drove from the parked position straight into the apartment building. The motorist then left the scene of the crash.

No one from the apartment building was injured during the incident, but the building sustained $6,000 in damage from the collision, according to Newton Police Chief Don Brown.

According to an incident report, police estimated the driver was traveling about 15 mph when the vehicle collided with the building. The extent of damage to the Jeep is unknown.

The Jeep was last seen leaving the parking lot of the apartment complex and heading North on Thomas Drive.

Brown said police are investigating the incident based on descriptions from witnesses at the scene. No one was arrested as of press time Wednesday.
