History unfolds

February 28, 2012

African American heritage was in the spotlight Tuesday at Catawba Valley Community College.

CVCC celebrated Black History Month with its 10th annual Multicultural Celebration inside’s the college's Tarlton Complex.

The celebration gave students a day-long opportunity to visit Sankofa, an African American Museum on Wheels provided by curator and owner Angela Jennings.

Jennings, of Denmark, S.C., has been collecting historical African American artifacts, photographs and documents for 20-25 years and shares her collection with college-aged students throughout the country.

She is on the road all year long.

“It’ a serious need,” Jennings said. “It’s not being taught in the public school system, and some colleges don’t even teach it.”

Jennings’ collection uses historical artifacts and displays to tell the story of the African American race from slavery to modern day.

Clarissa Hunt was one of many CVCC students who visited the museum Tuesday.

“Seeing this stuff makes me realize that it wasn’t just white people capturing slaves, it was Africans selling their own people as well,” she said. “It’s interesting to see how history unfolds.”

Hunt said history is taught in school via textbooks, but the museum exposes truths not included in most books.

“I think it should be taught more, and there should be more classes about it,” she said.

The evening program at CVCC included songs by the One Sound United Community Choirs, music, a drama and keynote address by Teresa Biggs, senior vice president of Peoples Bank.

...how about we teach American History, of which the forced servitude of Africans was apart and we leav it at that....or we can have White History in April, Hispanic History..er wait we already have that in Ocotber I think, Indian History....Chineses History, vietnamese history or Ukrainina History.

Guess what each of these minorities cultural histories are far more tragic than the african history in america!

Why dont we just can the whole thing and OBSERVE AMERICAN HISTORY YEAR FOREVER and quit subdividing into racial groups!
