High sanitation ratings, clean restaurant?

January 26, 2012

Catawba County health officials say at least 40 citizens have reported recent illnesses related to eating at the Harbor Inn seafood restaurant on Fairgrove Church Road in Conover.

Harbor Inn's owner told The O-N-E this week there are no problems with his restaurant's food, its handling or storage.

Health officials reported no abnormal findings in inspections of the restaurant since patrons' reports. The restaurant also received high sanitation grades in recent inspections by Catawba County Public Health's environmental health division. An inspection on Dec. 29, 2011 yielded a 99.5 score.

Is a health inspector's sanitation rating an accurate indicator of the cleanliness of a restaurant?
