Hickory wins record 14th girls Classic title
Hickory won its second-straight Catawba Valley Classic girls title, knocking off previously unbeaten Alexander Central, 74-43.
Behind 17 points from tournament MVP Yazmen Hannah, the Lady Red Tornadoes (11-0) won a battle of unbeaten teams against the Lady Cougars (12-1).
Hickory's Erika Troutman also recorded a near double-double in Saturday's title game with 12 points, nine rebounds and six assists.
Troutman was selected to the All-tournament team, as was teammate Danasia Witherspoon, who finished with 15 points against Alexander Central.
Trailing 11-9, Hickory used a 19-0 run in the first and second quarters to pull ahead in the game for good.
Marie Ritchie and Maty Setzer each scored 13 points to lead the Lady Cougars.
Ritchie, a member of the girls all-tournament team, also grabbed 11 rebounds and blocked four shots.
Third-place game: Newton-Conover 50, Fred T. Foard 48
Junior Lanecia Williams made a lay up with four seconds left, lifting the Lady Red Devils to a win in the Catawba Valley Classic girls consolation final.
Williams finished with a game-high 17 points for Newton-Conover (5-4).
N-C's Taylor Petty scored 11 points, and was the lone Lady Red Devil selected to the girls all-tournament team.
Kayla Whitworth paced Foard (7-5) with 13 points, while Sadasia Tipps added 12 points.
The Lady Tigers' Chelsea Turner, who was only Lady Tiger selected to the all-tournament team, scored seven points against Newton-Conover.
