Hickory High swimmer Graham Williams is among 12 student athletes who have tentatively committed to swimming and diving teams at the University of North Carolina.
The UNC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams signed 12 prospective student-athletes to national letters of intent during the early signing period according to Tar Heel head swimming coach Rich DeSelm. The class is expected to be among the nation’s best, and it includes seven men and five women. The 12 student-athletes will enroll at Carolina in August 2011.
“We are extremely excited to announce our signees entering UNC next August. Many of these exciting prospects and their parents visited Chapel Hill during their junior year, communicated that UNC was among their top choices and were proactive in the recruiting process,” said DeSelm.
Williams is a Hickory native, and is the son of Kevin and Ann Williams. He is a 6-foot-3 distance freestyler.
Williams has career best times of 4:30.79 in the 500-yard freestyle, 9:12.73 in the 1000-yard freestyle and 15:23.02 in the 1650-yard freestyle. At Hickory High School he is coached by Cathy Hitchcock, and swims for the YMCA Seahorse Swim Team under the guidance of Jon Jolley.
“For the men, we have an exciting and talented group to announce,” said DeSelm. “The incoming men are very enthusiastic about UNC and, due to so many men graduating this spring, will likely be counted on to contribute immediately.”
