Hickory Post 48 survived a four-hour slugfest on Wednesday with a 23-16 victory against Waynesville in both team's Area IV West Division opener.

After a 13-1 victory against Kings Mountain on Tuesday, Hickory improves to 2-0 on the season.

Waynesville, who is new to the Area IV West Division this season, falls to 1-1.

Post 48 pulled ahead 9-2 in the first two innings before Waynesville scored eight runs in the top of the third to gain a 10-9 advantage.

The two teams jostled with the lead until the sixth inning, when Hickory scored five runs to pull ahead in the game for good.

Included in the inning were a two-RBI double by Phillip Carroll and an RBI triple by Zach Jarrett.

Both teams combined for 36 hits in Wednesday's game, including Hickory with 20 of them.

Jarrett led that effort and was a home run short of hitting for the cycle. He drove in five RBIs in Wednesday's legion contest.

Aaron Rudisill and Jackson Gilliam added three hits apiece. Rudisill tallied four RBIs, while Gilliam brought home three runs.

Hickory pitcher Ben Watson picked up the win on the mound, while Colton Chapman earned the four-out save.

Post 48 is on the road tonight at Rutherford County before returning home on Friday against Burke County.

Both Area IV West league games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
