Hickory student charged with rape

February 27, 2012

A Hickory High School student was charged with first-degree rape after an alleged incident outside an area church on Saturday.

A 14-year-old girl says she was raped by two teenage boys Saturday afternoon outside of Exodus Church on Highland Avenue in Hickory.

Hickory police say the girl knew both suspects, including Mikal Jerome Gray, a 17-year-old Hickory High School student.

The girl says Gray and a 15-year-old male suspect raped her after a gathering for youth at Exodus Church.

Hickory Police Department (HPD) Capt. Thurman Whisnant said he does not believe the gathering was a church function.

“By the end of the night, we did an investigation, which is still ongoing,” Whisnant said.

HPD arrested both boys involved in the alleged incident.

Gray is charged with first-degree rape and first-degree sexual offense. He is in the Catawba County Jail under a $300,000 secured bond.

The 15-year-old suspect has been charged in juvenile court.

does it really matter where this happened? there is no excuse for forcing yourself on another. unfortunately, this is not this young man's first time in trouble, but, rape is much more serious than stealing a scooter or smoking pot.

does it really matter if it was a church sponsered event? regardless of the time of day, the location, what the girl was wearing..."no means NO!". This young man's mother was quoted in the Hickory Daily record as stating that her son was at an event for young men, and what was a girl doing at an event for men? is that an excuse? no.
according to mom, he also admitted to some things happened that shouldn't have. come on mom...do you really believe he is going to tell you that he forced himself on a girl? when you stop protecting your son and covering for him, when he has to face the consequences, he may have a chance to develop into a decent man.
this isn't his first time in trouble.
