HIckory Post 48 splits Monday twin-bill

June 22, 2011

Two games, two opponents and two different results.

Hickory Post 48 earned a thrilling 4-3 victory over Moundsville (W.Va.) in the first game on Monday and closed the night out with a difficult 11-8 defeat to Shelby.

In the first game of a doubleheader, Hickory (6-6, 5-6) made a tremendous comeback against Moundsville by scoring three runs in the final two innings to pick up the 4-3 victory.

The rally started in the bottom of the sixth inning, as Kyle Johnson delivered a leadoff home run to cut Hickory's deficit to 3-2.

After a leadoff walk of Cole McGraw in the bottom of the seventh inning, Hickory's Phillip Carroll ended the game with a two-RBI walk off home run.

It appeared as if Hickory's momentum was going to continue into the second game against Shelby after a strong bottom half of the first inning. Back-to-back doubles by McGraw and Carroll led off the bottom of the first and plated the first run of the game.

However, Shelby tied the game up in the top of the second on a Mason McCullough single and took the lead in the third inning on two more runs. McCullough scored one of those runs and Even Loaces scored on a wild pitch.

Shelby distanced itself from Hickory in the top of the fourth inning with a grand slam off of the bat of Landen Elks and an RBI from Loaces to make it an 8-3 game.

Hickory pulled within three runs late and had a chance to win the game with Carroll once again at the plate.

Johnson drove in two RBIs with two outs in the ninth inning and two batters later, the bases were loaded. Another home run from Carroll could have given Post 48 a win. However, Carroll struck out to end the game.

Post 48 returns to action today when they host Caldwell at the American Legion Fairgrounds at 7 p.m. The team plays two more home games on Thursday against Burke and Friday versus Cherryville at 7 p.m.
