Hickory hoops coach charged with rapes over three years

July 25, 2012

A Hickory High School P.E. teacher and boys basketball coach has been charged with having sex with a student in 2007, 2008 and 2009.

Shawnacie Antoine Johnson, 39, of Conover, was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with four felony counts of statutory rape of a 13-, 14-, or 15-year-old. He was also charged with the felony crime of having sex with a student.

The charges come after Hickory Public Schools contacted Hickory Police Department on May 24 about sexual allegations from a current student at the school.

"The police department conducted an initial investigation of these and other alleged crimes and presented the investigation file to District Attorney Jay Gaither's office for review," according to a Tuesday press release from Hickory Police.

On Monday, an 18-member grand jury issued five indictments — four counts of  statutory rape occurring in 2007 and 2008 and another count of sexual activity with a student by a teacher in 2009.
