The Gaston Braves scored eight unanswered runs on their way to an 11-7 game one victory over Hickory Post 48 at South Point High School on Sunday.

Hickory (18-5) took an early 3-0 first-inning lead in the ball game behind an RBI single from Cole McGraw and two-RBI double from Jordan Eckard.

After Gaston tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the first, Hickory scored four unanswered runs to take a 7-3 lead after the top of the fourth. McGraw drove in two batters during the run, while Phillip Carroll and Colton Chapman each drove in one run.

The Braves (14-4) rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth with RBI singles from Spencer Wiles and Jarkevius Hopkins, as well as a two-RBI double from Logan Armstrong.

Gaston took its first lead of the game — one it did not relinquish — in the bottom of the fifth on a sac fly by Patrick Horne that plated Derek Perry.

Adding three more runs on an RBI single from Wiles and sac flies by Mykel Davis and Horne, Gaston took the early advantage in its Area IV second-round playoff series with Post 48.

Hickory and Gaston play the second game of the series Monday at Henkel-Alley Field at the American Legion Fairgrounds. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
