Hickory is one step away from the Area IV title series after a winning three of four games against the Gaston Braves.
Post 48 tallied wins against Post 144-266 on Friday and Saturday to advance to the third round of the Area IV playoffs.
Hickory defeated Gaston by a score of 4-2 on Friday behind pitcher Tyler Pait’s performance.
Pait, who entered Friday’s contest only having pitched seven innings all season, struck out 10 Gaston batters in a complete game outing.
It was the second-straight game Hickory pitching had shut down Gaston’s offense.
Post 48 pitcher Colton Allison allowed just three hits in his team’s series-tying 2-0 win on Thursday.
“It was sort of tough following up Colton’s performance,” Pait said. “He threw really well, and it gave our team a big boost. I knew this was a big win.”
“Coming in, I knew we had a great defense,” he added. “I just wanted to come in and throw strikes. I know our defense would make plays.”
On defense, Hickory right fielder Jordan Eckard made a diving catch on defense in the bottom of the third.
“Eckard’s diving catch really set the tone for us,” Pait said. “Everyone sort of fed off of that.
Zach Jarrett led Post 48 offensively in Friday’s win with two RBIs. Eckard and Ky’rawn Whitfield each drove in a run.
Phillip Carroll also went 4-for-5 with three singles, a double, two runs scored and a stole a base.
Hickory 14, Gaston 3 (seven innings)
Led by Jordan Eckard’s seven RBIs, Post 48 picked up a 10-run rule victory against the Braves on Saturday at Henkel-Alley Field.
Eckard drove in six of his seven runs on two hits, including a grand slam in the seventh inning and a two-RBI double in the fourth.
“My goal hitting is every time I step to the plate to try to hit the ball hard somewhere,” Eckard said in Friday’s victory.
Jarrett also homered in Saturday’s contest, driving in three runs in the third inning.
Hickory Post 48 (20-8) plays Shelby Post 82 (30-6) in the first game in their best-of-5 series starting today.
That contest will take place at Shelby High School starting at 7 p.m.
The two teams split their season series both winning at home.
Shelby was victorious 6-3 on June 25, while Hickory won 8-5 on June 27.View more articles in:
