The heat is on in Catawba County, and for the first time in several years, temperatures in Newton, Conover and other communities in the area are expected to reach 100 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service station for Greenville-Spartanburg, S.C., forecasts for the weekend ahead include highs near 101 degrees for Friday and highs right at the century mark for Saturday and Sunday.
Combined with high temperatures, humidity is expected to me high during the afternoon, creating a head indices of 105-115 degrees or higher at times, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reports.
"Heat index is how hot it feels when the humidity and the actual temperature are factored together," said Catawba County Emergency Management Coordinator Karyn Yaussy. "For example if it is 100 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday, and the relative humidity is 60 percent, the heat index could be 129 degree, which would be 'extreme danger' level."
