Hands-on learning

September 26, 2012

Local school children learn outdoors Tuesday during Environmental Field Days at Newton’s Southside Park.

The two-day event started last Thursday and rounded out the active learning Tuesday, Sept. 25. During the event, fifth graders from across Catawba County learned about environmental awareness from different environmental departments from the county.

The Catawba County Soil and Water Conservation District had hands on digging during the lecture so kids could see different types of soil. Education Coordinator Kelly Hoke had the kids to sift the dirt through different sifters during the educational discussion.

To read more of this story, pick up the Wednesday edition of Catawba County's community newspaper, The Observer News Enterprise, at newsstands throughout the county.
