Group heads to North Carolina to help with wildfire

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) —

A group of Mississippi firefighters are heading to North Carolina to assist in a wildfire battle.

WAPT-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1L00DmQ ) 20 firefighters from across the state are going to help fight the wildfire burning in the North Carolina mountains which officials say is threatening people and doubling in size.

Firefighters say they've been preparing for the trip for more than six months, but only got the call about going to North Carolina a couple of days ago. Communities near the fire include Marion, Nebo, Lake James and Glen Alpine.

A team of firefighters from Mississippi went to California in 2014 to fight wildfires near Sacramento, but several new recruits are participating in the North Carolina trip.

Officials expect the latest crew to be in North Carolina for about two weeks.
