'Good music, good fun'

A Furry Greene Fox

Two Lenoir-Rhyne University graduates, a choir tour to Europe and a desire to make people laugh brought Natasha Fox and Laura Greene together.

Fox, 24, and Greene, 26, were part of a radio show at L-R where the pair liked to "goof off" while on the show.

"We wrote comedy and tried to be a comedy band," Fox said.

The girls noticed their comedy act wasn't working, so the pair opted for something more musical. In 2008, the group became known as A Furry Greene Fox.

Fox plays the washboard, guitar, harmonica and keyboard, and Greene plays the guitar, banjo, mandolin, piano and ukulele.

The band's music is described as bluegrass and Americana with some folk and pop music. You'll hear mostly original music from A Furry Greene Fox, as Fox and Greene write their own music.

"I like seeing people enjoy the music," Greene said. "When they know the words, that makes it really fun."

Even though Greene and Fox live outside of Catawba County, most of their performance venues are in Hickory. They've played at Copperbeans and Java Journey, to name a few.

On Saturday, catch A Furry Greene Fox from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Music and Mud festival at the Newton-Conover Auditorium. The festival is 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and is free to the public.

Sponsors for this year's event include The Observer News Enterprise and Outlook, Medicap Pharmacy, Newton-Conover City Schools, Outlaw Pottery, Jim and Peggy Templeton, Hyperformance Graphics, The Trott House Inn, Matthews Construction, Special Events Services, BB&T Newton-Main, United Arts Council of Catawba County, Woodlief Electric, The Cove Church and Pin Station.
