Fred T. Foard's Jake Pierce commits to East Carolina

October 31, 2012

Fred T. Foard swimmer Jake Pierce has committed to East Carolina University.

Pierce chose ECU over Boston College and N.C. State.

He said the decision to go with the Pirates was simple.

"I chose ECU because the team and coaches were amazing," he said. "They really wanted me to be there, and I felt at home there. The campus and academics were just phenomenal, and I know I will get so much faster there."

Pierce, who was the Northwestern 3A/4A swimmer of the year last season, has finished second at the state 3A meet in the 500-yard freestyle event the past two seasons.

He was fourth in the 200-yard freestyle last year, as well.

Pierce made his college choice announcement on Facebook.

“Officially committed to swim for East Carolina University!! Can’t wait to be a Pirate, Class of 2017!” said a post on Pierce’s Facebook page on Wednesday.

Representing the Hickory Foundation YMCA as a representative of the N.C. Swimming Board, Pierce has been a finalist in the YMCA’s National Championship in three events.

Pierce will serve as a captain of the Fred T. Foard swim team again this season — a post he has held for the past two seasons since his sophomore year at Foard.
