Former teacher appears in court
The former Maiden High School teacher accused of having sex with a student appeared in court Monday.
No action was taken in the case against Christopher Caldwell, who is charged with one count of taking indecent liberties with a student and one count of sexual activity with a student.
An attorney involved in the case was out of town, and the District Attorney's Office advised Caldwell to stay in touch with his attorney for a future court date.
The incident allegedly occurred in early March with a 17-year-old Maiden High student. Caldwell was 25 years old when the charges surfaced.
Catawba County Schools suspended Caldwell on March 4 with pay then removed his pay March 9.
Caldwell was later indicted on the sexual misconduct charges. He submitted to authorities at the Catawba County Sheriff's Office and was released on a $9,500 bond.
The CCS Board of Education dismissed Caldwell from his position at Maiden High School in late March after a requested board meeting from then-Superintendent Dr. Tim Markley.
Caldwell appeared in Superior Court in August and entered a not-guilty plea.
