Former head coaches Phelps, Miller join BH staff
The Bunker Hill football team started practice on Thursday with two new members to its coaching staff.
Jason Phelps, who was the head coach at Fred T. Foard High School last season, joins the Bears as their defensive coordinator.
Phelps will also teach strength and conditioning at Bunker Hill High.
“I want to make this program the best I can make it and do the best I can with whatever I am coaching,” Phelps said. “I want to use the weight room program to help all of the athletes here at the school the best that I can. I’m going to miss the kids at Foard. I wish them the best, but I’m going to help these kids at Bunker Hill be the best they can be.”
Bunker Hill head coach Travis Conner said Phelps is a welcome addition to his squad.
“I’m really tickled to have Jason Phelps over here with us,” Conner said. “He is a heck of a football coach and a better man. We’re tickled to have him.”
Being a defensive coordinator is nothing new to Phelps, who spent three years coaching defense at Rockingham County and two at Person County.
Phelps also ran the defense as head coach at both Bartlett Yancey and Fred T. Foard high schools.
“I’ve been a defensive coordinator for most of my coaching career,” Phelps said. “That’s a role I’m not stepping into uncharted territory. I’m stepping into a role I know I am doing. All I’ve got to do is step into what Ryan had been doing with them and just go with it.”
The Bears also bring back former head coach Lee Miller, who will coach the defensive line.
A total of 86 players were out on the field during Bunker Hill’s first official practice on Thursday.
Forty-six of those were junior varsity members, while the other 40 were on varsity.
“Our numbers have been really good all summer,” Conner said. “We’ve gotten a lot of good stuff done this summer.”
