Foard Takes Tourney Title

The Fred T. Foard Tigers took home the top prize at this week’s Freedom Soccer Invitational. The Tigers defeated Asheville 1-0 Thursday on a penalty kick by Brody Ruffner.
Ruffner is the 2010 tournament MVP, and teammates Nick Bolick and Jason Smith were named to the all-tournament team.
Foard finished the tournament with a 2-0-1 record. The Tigers tied Mooresville 1-1 in Monday’s opening match, beat host Freedom 2-1 on Tuesday, and won the championship Thursday.
Foard plays at home Monday against Boiling Springs Crest.

Volleyball
NEWTON-CONOVER 3, BUNKER HILL 0
The Red Devils swept the Bears on Thursday at Bunker Hill in a conference volleyball match.
Newton-Conover won the match 25-11, 25-7 and 25-14.
Haley Null had five digs for Bunker Hill, and Sarah Brown had two blocks. Statistics for Newton-Conover were not available.

Thursday’s scheduled game between the Hickory Crawdads and Kannapolis Intimidators was postponed because of rain.
The Crawdads and Intimidators will make up the game at 6:05 p.m. Friday as part of a doubleheader with back-to-back, seven-inning games. Game 2 starts approximately 30 minutes following the completion of the Game 1.
The Crawdads enter the doubleheader Friday 3-1/2 games behind first-place Lakewood.
