For the first time this season Fred T. Foard's Lady Tigers took their basketball show on the road.
"I was a little worried," said Foard coach Wendy Price. "It was our first away game. There's cold weather, we’re in a new place we're not used to shooting in."
Relying on defense, the Tigers were able to ease their coach's fears and cruise to a 63-30 victory over Bunker Hill. The win improves Foard to 4-0.
"I told them they have to play great defense," Price said. "You can always depend on your defense."
After building a nine-point first half lead, Foard turned up the defensive pressure to start the third quarter. With a full court press, the Tigers forced Bear mistakes, collected steals and converted turnovers into points.
"Any time when you do the pressure and you get a steal here and there or a turnover here and there, and go back and convert points, it keeps building," Price said.
An 11-2 run to start the second half helped expand a 35-26 halftime lead into an 18-point margin.
"I wasn't too pleased in the beginning. We came out a little flat, and out intensity wasn't where we normally have it," Price said. "Then in the second half they started to pick up. Shots fell a little easier and it worked to our advantage."
Foard's Kayla Whitworth and Brooke Robinson led the Lady Tigers with 13 points each. Chelsea Turner scored 10.
For Bunker Hill Haley Null led the Lady Bears with 10 points. Sarah Brown and Margaret Connor each scored 8.
