First-ever O-N-E Classic is Saturday

August 11, 2011

For the first time, The Observer News Enterprise is hitting the links, but you don’t have to own expensive golf equipment or be an experienced duffer to join in the fun.

With the inaugural edition of The O-N-E Classic on Saturday, Catawba County’s community newspaper is inviting area residents to join in a fun afternoon of mini-golf at Pin Station, and in the process, they can help a good cause — education.

“We are excited to partner with our sponsors to hold the first ever O-N-E Classic to benefit our ‘Newspapers in Education’ program,” said O-N-E Publisher Michael Willard. “Every golfer that enjoys a round of golf at Pin Station throughout Saturday will be helping to provide community news and information into the hands of school students throughout Catawba County.”

That’s not all, Willard said.

“At the end of their rounds, we are asking all golfers to leave their scorecards behind, and the best scores of the day will be entered to win trophies and other prizes,” he said.

Representatives from The O-N-E will be at the Pin Station golf course from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. Saturday. While O-N-E staffers are on hand, golfers can register to win door prizes, get great subscription offers and meet the people who help produce the community newspaper five days a week, Willard said.

“We hope golfers will come by, visit with our staff and take advantage of great subscription offers,” he said. “With high school football season winding up the prep sports year, and the school sessions getting started soon, now is the time to subscribe to Catawba County;s community newspaper.”

Plus, the event it is a great way to support education.

“Every week, we deliver newspapers to schools throughout the county — at no charge to the schools,” Willard said. “Inside the classroom, teachers can use the newspaper as instructional tools, and young people can read about the happenings in their hometowns.

“We wouldn’t be able to provide these newspapers without the great sponsors of our ‘Newspapers in Education’ program,” he continued, “and by joining in the golfing fun throughout the day on Saturday, you can become one of those sponsors for the low cost of a game of golf. You can even have some family fun and win prizes in the process.”

Sponsors of The O-N-E Classic include 5-Star Car Wash, Whitfield’s by Design, Jitterbugs, Cosmetic Arts Academy, 2 Pink Magnolias, Ace Awards, Clater-Kaye Theatreworks, Medicap Pharmacy and Sylvan Learning Center and WNNC.

Other sponsors of The O-N-E’s “Newspapers in Education” program include The UPS Store, Outlaw Pottery, Jackie Weaver State Farm, Turner Finance and Medicap Pharmacy.

Pin Station is located at 525 West A Street in Newton. The bowling alley features mini-golf in front of the main building, which also includes the Newton Expo banquet and conference facility.
