Fire station repairs under way

May 29, 2012

Fire officials say it will take crews about four months to complete a $105,000 renovation project at Newton Fire Department’s Station No. 3.

Newton Fire Chief Kevin Yoder said construction began last week on interior renovations to the department’s station on Startown Road. The station, originally built in 1981, has not been renovated in more than 10 years and has substantial mold and safety issues, Yoder said.

The renovations will replace and repair a large portion of the station’s interior walls, which Yoder says have been damaged by water over the years.

“We’ve had a real water issue here,” Yoder said, adding that mold is growing behind many of the station’s walls.
