Fire destroys outbuilding

Maiden and Newton firefighters worked to extinguish a fire at a two-story storage building Wednesday.
Maiden assistant fire chief Tracy Caldwell said Maiden firefighters arrived at 1109 Zeb Haynes Road in Maiden at 3:10 p.m. to a storage outbuilding on fire. Caldwell said Maiden firefighters, with the help of Newton firefighters, had the structure fire extinguished in 15 minutes.
Caldwell said the fire started on the second-story of the storage building, which stored household items.
The storage facility sat beside a large white house. Caldwell said there were people outside at the time of the fire, but he said the wners were not home.
Bystanders at the scene said children were seen leaving the storage building minutes before it caught on fire.
Catawba County Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
Maiden Rescue also responded to the scene, while N.C. Highway Patrol and Maiden Police directed traffic at Zeb Haynes Road and Springdale Drive in Maiden.
