Fire destroys garage in Claremont

November 14, 2011

A fire destroyed a residential garage near Lookout Shoals Lake on Sunday.

It took six fire departments to put out the blaze at 4290 Stewart Road in Claremont that eventually destroyed the storage garage.

The garage was located behind the residence, and fire officials are still investigating the cause of the blaze.

The garage contained trucks, tractors and various equipment that was also damaged in the fire, said Shannon Eckard, a rescue responder with Oxford (Catfish) Fire and Rescue.

“The roof eventually fell in,” Eckard said, adding that the fire will probably result in a complete loss.

No one was injured in the fire, but the blaze did spread to the woods temporarily, Eckard said.

“The main problem they had was that there weren’t a lot of fire hydrants in the area,” he said, adding that responders used a “fire boat” to get water to the engines responding.

In addition to Oxford Fire Department, Claremont, Catawba and St. Stephens fire departments responded to the call.
