Fair's first taste

August 29, 2012

On the first morning of the Hickory American Legion fair, while tents are still being set up, Lucille Johnson and Joyce Peeler had a tall order: judge the baked goods–all them. One display with more than 50 entries and two judges. The containers didn’t matter, nor the process, the determining factor was taste.

Johnson and Peeler were just two of many judges that filled the outdoor exhibit hall Wednesday morning before the fair’s opening night. Judging began around 9 a.m. with the canned foods competition, the clothing and quilting competitions and photography. Baked goods and flower entries were the last to start at 10 a.m. Judges spent the morning carefully choosing winners for each category with minor hiccups including lost flower entries.
