Elderly couple dies in crash

December 24, 2010

An elderly Maiden couple died after an automobile accident Thursday morning on N.C. 16.
Vera Caldwell, 90, was driving herself and her husband, Frank, 94, in their 2002 Ford Escape when they were hit by a 2011 Honda minivan driven by Heather Joyner, 40, of Hickory.
The impact spun the Caldwells’ car onto the shoulder of the road in the southbound lane and sent Joyner’s car off the road to the left.
Joyner was treated and released at Frye Regional Medical Center.
Vera was taken to Catawba Valley Medical Center and was later pronounced dead. Frank was transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he later died.
No charges will likely be filed in the case as it appeared it was the Caldwells' vehicle that crossed the lane and hit Joyner's vehicle.
A service of remembrance for the Caldwells will be held at 3 p.m. Dec. 27 at Mt. Ruhama Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1-2:45 p.m. at the church prior to the funeral.
