Duke expects Austin Rivers' NBA decision next week

March 23, 2012

DURHAM — Duke expects freshman guard Austin Rivers to decide next week whether he will enter the NBA draft.

Team spokesman Matt Plizga said Friday that Rivers will discuss his future plans with his family this weekend, and an announcement on his future is expected next week.

The son of Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers averaged a team-leading 15.5 points and was a unanimous selection as the ACC's rookie of the year.

"He hasn't decided anything yet," Rivers said before the Celtics played at Philadelphia. "He's got to make a decision. He leans one way one day, then the other. That's part of it."

His unquestioned top highlight was a buzzer-beating 3-pointer that gave Duke an 85-84 victory at North Carolina.

If he opts to leave, he would become the second one-and-done Blue Devils guard in two years. Kyrie Irving left after one season and Cleveland made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft.

"It's good that he has choices," Doc Rivers said. "It'll be soon."

Rivers said it would be "interesting" if Austin Rivers played for the Celtics next season.
